Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company will promote the 2024 Fire Prevention Week (FPW) theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you,” with its annual Fire Prevention Open House on Sunday, October 20. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the company’s station, 94 Route 520, Morganville, NJ 07751 (between Route 9 and Route 18).
“We hope to give those who attend our Open House a glimpse into what being a volunteer at Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company looks like and the sense of pride that comes from joining,” said Chief Brandon Beja.
At the event, the community can meet their local lifesavers, tour fire trucks, try on gear, and learn about volunteering with the department. The firefighters will also share fire prevention and safety tips coinciding with this year’s FPW theme.
Smoke Alarm Statistics and Fire Prevention Tips
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 54 percent. Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Members of the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company encourage all residents to embrace this year’s theme by abiding by these key safety tips and guidelines:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
- Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
Volunteer with Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company
