Volunteer Spotlight– Keith Badler

The thrill of overcoming challenging situations paired with a desire to serve and protect the community drove Keith Badler towards the fire service. When Badler became a firefighter over 30 years ago, those around him didn’t understand it, and his parents used to joke that he would wake up in the middle of the night to help a stranger, but wouldn’t clean up after himself. However, the knowledge and experiences Badler has gained and continues to gain as a volunteer have been indispensable and have helped pave him into the person he is today.

This role offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible, positive impact in critical situations. The camaraderie and close bonds formed with fellow firefighters can also be deeply rewarding, creating a sense of belonging to a dedicated and courageous community,” said Badler.

Throughout his lengthy career in the fire service, Badler has served as a fire chief for two separate terms, totaling 16 years, the fire commissioner for a three-year term and has held multiple other roles in the fire company, both operational and administrative. Currently, Badler serves as the fire company’s assistant chief.

Plenty of skills that Badler has learned as a volunteer translates into other aspects of his life, most notably teamwork and collaboration. At the firehouse, Badler states that teamwork is paramount, as they rely on one another to not only help the individuals that they are responding to, but to help each other as well. To ensure that all volunteers are prepared to respond to whatever emergency may present itself, training and preparation are constant.

“Despite the serious nature of their work, there’s often a sense of humor and lightheartedness among the crew. When a call comes in, the atmosphere shifts dramatically to one of focused urgency,” said Badler. “Firefighters quickly mobilize, demonstrating a deep commitment to their duty and the community they serve. The environment is dynamic, with each situation presenting unique challenges that the team must adapt to and overcome together.”

Badler has observed a lot of change in the fire house. The training over the last three decades has improved drastically and has allowed fire companies to prepare for a plethora of emergencies. Although, over the same period of time, Badler has observed a sharp decline in volunteerism. Badler encourages those who have the desire to make a difference to consider becoming a volunteer.

It takes a lot of commitment and time but in the end it’s a great feeling to help the community. We need the help of residents to help us help them,” said Badler.
